Mayor Robert Rivas of Bergenfield, NJ - the first Filipino American mayor in the East Coast, serving the borough from 1999-2003.
“Rivas broke barriers and paved the way for future generations, showing what is possible through dedication and service. Rivas’s election as Bergenfield Mayor was a milestone for Filipino American representation, inclusion, and progress.
He remained active as public servant after his mayoral stint, as Chairman of the Bergenfield Planning Board, where he helped shape the growth and development of the community.
He served as chair of the Board of the nonprofit Filipino American Legal Education Defense Fund (FALDEF).
Rivas, an immigration lawyer, is known for his wit and joviality and his deep concern for the Filipino community. In his twilight years, he continued to actively serve FALDEF, lending his immigration law experience to the needy.
Rivas is known for his wit and joviality. Here with colleague Atty. JT Mallonga in an immigration forum on Long Island, NY in 2024.
At a legal forum in 2024, he said he anticipated a major crackdown of immigrants in the US and an assault to due processes. He emphasized the need for everyone to be aware of their fundamental rights and have access to legal help.
Filipino leader Ludi Hughes penned a farewell note on her Facebook page: “Goodbye and may you Rest in Peace. Your life was defined by integrity, kindness and lasting impact to others. We all celebrate your selfless service, dedication to your family, and your service to the community. You were an example to many that left a lasting impact to those around you.”
A tribute honoring the life of Mayor Rivas is scheduled for May 2, 2026 at the Bergenfield Borough Hall 10am-12pm. #
