Raga’s bid for NY State senator backed by FilAm Democrats in NY

New York City - New York State Assemblymember Steven Raga has the support of the Filipino American Democratic Club of New York (FADC-NY) in case he decides to run for senator representing NYS District 12.

In a press release, the FilAm organization said it “stands proudly behind Raga as he explores a run for New York State Senate District 12.”

Senator Michael Gianaris prepares to retire after years of service to Western Queens thus opening the senatorial seat.

The FADC-NY thanked Gianaris for his leadership and recognized his retirement as a “moment of transition for our community.”

Raga became the first Filipino American elected to office in New York State, opening a new chapter for Filipino American political leadership in New York. A founder of the FADC-NY, he helped build it from the ground up in 2016 and remains an active leader.

Rooted in Western Queens, across Woodside, Sunnyside, Elmhurst, Maspeth, and Little Manila, Raga shows up for immigrants, workers, families, and seniors, bringing people together to get things done. Over two terms in the Assembly, he has built a record defined by accountability and results, earning trust across Senate District 12.

The FADC-NY assured that if Raga chooses to run as senator, the group will mobilize and help build broad, people-powered campaign to win in Western Queens.

“There is an opportunity to make history again by becoming the first Filipino American elected to that chamber.”

At a time of rising costs and renewed attacks on immigrants and communities of color, we need leadership that is rooted, tested, and ready. Steven Raga represents a new generation of Filipino American and AANHPI leadership grounded in service and results, the FADC-NY said.

Raga has been recently appointed Co-Chair of the People’s Budget, the New York State Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic & Asian Legislative Caucus’ comprehensive annual budget agenda focused on investing in communities of color and improving quality of life statewide.

The People’s Budget serves as a blueprint for legislative budget advocacy, centering investments in labor protections, economic justice, housing, healthcare, education, and other critical areas impacting Black, Latino, and Asian communities.

As Co-Chair, Raga will help lead discussions with Caucus members, synthesizing district-level priorities and shaping final recommendations in the People’s Budget.

“It’s an honor to serve as Co-Chair of the People’s Budget at a moment when working families are facing rising costs, housing instability, and economic uncertainty,” said Raga. “The People’s Budget ensures that the voices of our most diverse and historically underserved communities are not only heard, but reflects in real budget priorities that deliver dignity, opportunity, and stability.”#
